KUALA LUMPUR : Application for halal certification is now easier with the utilisation of Halal Verified Engine (HVE), which will help expedite the application process, said DagangHalal Bhd.

HVE data base, which uses cloud computing, acts as a resource centre for product list, service and halal certification bodies that have been certified halal by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim).
DagangHalal group chief executive Mohamed Hazli Mohamed Hussain said HVE has more than 100,000 products and services in the food and beverage (F&B) sector, slaughter houses, logistic, pharmaceutical, cosmetic and ingredient.
For example, the ingredients that were imported had obtained the approvals from the halal certification body in that country which is registered with Jakim, he told Bernama.
“Through this new method, the applicants only have to download the halal certificate from HVE without having to contact the manufacturers of the ingredients. This not only facilitates the applicant but also helps Jakim in ensuring the authenticity of the certificate,” he said.
He said DagangHalal had targeted the number of companies registered to use HVE to rise to 10,000 in the next two years from 260 companies currently.
Launched on Dec 11, 2013, HVE is now accessible by companies in various sectors including hotel, fast-food establishments and foreign halal certification bodies.
DagangHalal spent close to RM3.5 million to develop the database.
There are 73 halal bodies worldwide recognised by Jakim, involving 57 non-government halal bodies and the rest are halal bodies of government agencies..Out of the total, 26 foreign halal certification bodies have agreed to provide the list of materials that they have certified to HVE to further facilitate the applicants to get halal certificate for the ingredients that they use.
Following the agreement, the 26 halal bodies can upload the halal certificates and information on the ingredients that they have certified in the search engine one by one or in bulk.

Commenting on the contribution of HVE to the country’s halal industry, Mohamed Hazli said the halal certification process could be made easier and further facilitate the exports of local halal products.
He said the process of examining the authenticity of halal certificates was the main cause of the long certification process, especially when the applicants want to change the name of product, type of product and validity date that has expired.
With the HVE, the problems could be avoided as it has security features such as Quick Response Code (QR Code) to avoid forgery particularly by international certification agencies, he explained..Besides that, the facility will also ensure that the halal certificate that have been downloaded is clear and can be understood by Jakim, in contrast to those obtained on your own, which could be destroyed if delivered via mail and facsimile and may be lost during the delivery
process.
HVE also ensured that the halal certificate which are nearing the expiry date could only be seen and not downloaded to block forgery of the certificates, he added.– BERNAMA
